The Cedar Bucket Cafeteria gets its name from the trophy that was awarded to the winner of the traditional football game between two segregated Black high schools in Tennessee. (See the About Us/Photos section for more history)

The Cedar Bucket Cafeteria adopted this bit of history for its name. The Cedar Bucket Cafeteria is a traditional "Meat & Three" restaurant that offers southern cooking in a cafeteria style environment. We specialize in home cooking with recipes that have been in families for years and handed down throughout the generations. There are different menu items for each day and breakfast is served Saturday mornings. Each day's menu has a choice of at least three meat items; usually four, a variety of vegetables and casseroles, to include green beans, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, baked apples, turnip greens and pinto beans.

We are especially known for our cornbread, sometimes called "Hoe Cakes." Hoe Cakes date back for many centuries and are entrenched in the colorful history of African-American slaves. When meals were delivered to the fields, slaves often baked their own bread over open fires. Traditionally, the bread batter was placed on a clean garden hoe and held over the open flame. Thus the name, "Hoe Cakes".
